This year, a whopping 15.93 lakh registered for NEET UG 2024. There was a rise in applications from J&K as due to the offline application mode available to the students of the Jammu and Kashmir region, many more students from the state could apply for NEET. A total of 33,357 candidates applied for NEET 2024 from Jammu and Kashmir. This is despite the internet restrictions in the region.
NEET 2024 is to be held on 05th May 2024 and 23rd June 2024. This is the first time that more than 15 lac candidates have applied for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2024. This is a steep rise of 14.52 per cent from NEET 2018. Indian students aspiring to study medicine abroad have also applied for NEET this year. Secondly the medical entrance exam — NEET has been made mandatory for admission to AIIMS and JIPMER.
In a surprising trend, In wake of the issues faced by students, the NTA had allowed offline applications for NEET 2024 only for students applying from the Jammu and Kashmir region.
Maximum applications have been received from Maharashtra with 2.28 lakh candidates; Uttar Pradesh came second with 1.54 lakh candidates. Other states with most registrations are Karnataka with 1.19 lakh applications, Tamil Nadu and Kerala with 1.17 and 1.16 lakh candidates, respectively.
Lakshadweep with 183 registrations is the lowest followed by Daman and Diu and Andaman and Nicobar islands with 707 and 800 applications, respectively. These states have very low population density.
The sequel to more registrations is that more students are going to vie for 76,928 MBBS seats in India for the year 2020. As per Medical Council of India (MCI), 272 MBBS colleges offers a total of 41,388 government medical seats through NEET 2024. A total of 76,928 medical seats will be offered in 532 government as well as private colleges of India.
Thus 20.7 students are vying for each MBBS seat in India this year. Government MBBS seats always carry a low fees. So more than 38.4 students are going to fight for each low fees MBBS seat in India. With more than 50% reservations in our country, almost 78 general category students will vie for these government MBBS seats. By all these figures, NEET exam can be classified as a very tough entrance exam of India. Students need to work very hard to get admission to MBBS in India.
