Experts Look Forward In Nurturing Better ‘Med-Tech Innovations’ In The North-East Region

Experts put forward views urging scientists and universities to work in rhythm with the industry in order to nurture the med-tech innovation in the Northeast region. Uddhab Kumar Bharali, Padma Shri and leading innovator said that innovation becomes an innovation when the accommodated design borne out of the sense of common people benefits at least one end user.  He felt with contentment that the innovation created by him should help a man feed himself with food even after 14 years.

IMPROVEMENTS THAT CAN LEAD TO BETTERMENT

·        Prof. (Dr.) Dipika Deka, Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University, laid emphasis on the inadequate space occupied by the North-East in the med- industry map where the medical practitioners and engineers of the region are mostly fused with low awareness of the medtech sector. While speaking at a webinar on Bio design organised by SSUHS – Innovating Medical Technologies, Deka also stressed on Assam’s conditions that lacks in creating a “med- nurturing environment” which allows for motivated health technology innovators, risk taking and failure including the difficult terrain that throws challenge in the way for accessible healthcare services. She stressed on the application of design thinking to pave the way for a broader healthcare system.

·        Prof. (Dr.) Umesh Chandra Sarma, founder vice-chancellor of SSUHS and also the guest of honour of the occasion referred to the three ‘I’s that compromises Bio design- identify, invent and implement. He added that “Interventional Cardiology” and “Interventional Radiology” are the new technologies on the horizon. He said that convergence for the welfare of mankind is the most important of all.

·        Dr Avijit Bansal, Consulting fellowship director at the School of Bio design under AIIMS-New Delhi throws light on the convergence of Business and design as the two components of a successful biodesign, where medical innovation can happen when doctors and engineers work together to bring a phenomenal dimension in the field of ‘technology and innovation’ and the end result to it should be contributing to the well-being of the patients by alleviating their problems if the above two components are brought into consideration.

·        Prof. Utpal Bora of Biosciences and Bioengineering of IIT-Guwahati stated how innovations greatly impact our society economically providing deep knowledge and creating awareness about skilled human resources, finance and timeliness that makes an innovation in society productive.
