NEET 2020: Number of Applicants in Tamil Nadu dips by 17%

Number of NEET 2020 Applicants in Tamil Nadu dips by 17%

According to National Testing Agency data, the number of students has been dropped in Tamil Nadu who applied for NEET 2020 by 17% over 2018-19, against the increase of 74,000 in all over India.

There are 1.40 lakh applications registered this year against 1.40 lakh registered in 2019. This is the first time a dip has been registered since 2016. According to the teachers and counselors, the reason behind this change in number is the increasing cut-off, which has proved tough for the state board students, and more repeaters getting seats. So due to the huge demand-supply gap in the seats have discouraged aspirants from writing Neet without preparation.

In 2019, 2,916 that is 70% of the total students that is 4,202 who joined MBBS after writing NEET paper 2019. Many students this year said that they will take a break and apply in NEET 2021. A student of Chennai, R Vivek Kumar said that “I have been attending coaching class and preparing for the exam. But I am not confident of getting into a medical school this year. I want to perfect my scores in the mock tests before I write my entrance exam.”

N Vijayan, principal of Zion Matric Higher Secondary School in Tambaram, says that many students were disheartened last year after the increased cut-off news. Although so many repeaters have got seats, therefore many students wanted to take a break to prepare for the medical entrance. P Swaminathan, the secretary of SRV Schools in Namakkal and Trichy says that more than 50% of the students who are appearing for NEET 2020 are the repeaters. He added, “The attitude towards the MBBS is changing. The current batch students are looking for the options which are other than the medicine.” The cut-off for BC students, which was 475 marks in 2019, can cross 500 this year.

It has been also noted that the number of students joining the Biology stream or Science stream in Class XI is continuously declining every year. The number of NEET aspirants from the government and government-aided schools has dropped drastically this year. Even the teachers are also not very enthusiastic due to the results. According to a government school headmaster, the NTA should fix a cap on attempts or bar old students from appearing for the NEET. Presently there is no limit on the number of attempts a student can make to clear the NEET.
