The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi on 22-04-2019 confirmed the reservations in admission for EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) students in CEI's (Central Educational Institutions).
The Human Resource Development Ministry had also sought the permission of the Election Commission before moving the proposal in the Cabinet, as Model Code of Conduct has been enforced ahead of Lok Sabha elections.
In the current academic year approx 2 lakh additional seats will be created. In order to apply the reservation for the students belonging to the EWS category, the government has approved INR 4315.15 crore rupees.
The Rajya Sabha on January 9 approved change in constitution to provide 10 per cent exception to general category poor in jobs and education. This quota will be over 50 per cent reservation which is already given to Scheduled Castes, Registered Classes and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
