How To Pursue A Career In Railways After 12th Standard - The Pathway

About Indian Railways

Indian Railways has continually been the backbone of the Indian government and the Indian economy. The network of the Indian Railways is a medium to connect all states in one string. Indian Railways serves as the largest rail network in Asia and the  2nd largest network in the world. 

It has approximately 115,000 km of track length with 12,617 trains running throughout the country connecting more than 7,172 stations and carrying over 23 million passengers daily. The Indian Railways also serves as one of the world’s largest employers with millions of people as a workforce.

Perks of Railway Jobs

Job Security, Indian Railways offers residential quarters, free medical care in Railway hospitals to its employees, a schooling facility for the children of the employees, Rail passes for free travel for the entire family. Consequently, there is an extreme competition to get a job in railways as the number of candidates is far more than the number of vacancies.

Now, moving towards the primary objective of this article: how to get railway jobs in India, to start with let us have a look at the various job profiles and their respective eligibility criteria.  

 

Job profiles and Basic Eligibility Criteria for Railway Jobs in India

The Indian railway job profiles are classified into two categories – technical and non-technical which are then further classified into four groups namely A, B, C, and D.

 

Group A and group B are the officer-level posts, The medical staff, engineering staff, and the other officials come under group A/ group B. Selection for group A is done via are Union Service Public Commission. 

Group C comprises subordinate staff positions like supervisors, clerks, and skilled labor, and lastly, Group D consists of unskilled laborers. The selection process for group C/group D is administered by the Railway Recruitment Control Board.

 

GROUP A: Aspirants with bachelor’s degrees in engineering, medical (MBBS), or any other relevant stream are eligible to apply.

GROUP B:  There is no specific exam for the group B category because the group B officials are promoted from the group C section by the railway. 

GROUP C: For the group C category, candidates with 12th or equivalent are eligible. Some major job profiles of group C are the ALP/technician, ticket collector, goods guard, Assistant Station Master, etc.

GROUP D: Group D comprises porters, gatemen, trackmen, pointsmen, attendants, gatemen, etc. Applicants who have passed class 10 from any recognized Board/NCVT/SCVT and come under the age limit are eligible. 

 

How one can Get a Railway Jobs after 12th

After 12th/ 10+2 candidates who wish to join Railways would have to write an entrance exam organized by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). There is no specific course for these exams as the syllabus mainly comprises General Awareness, Mathematics, General Intelligence, and Reasoning topics. To build a strong concept in this subject, candidates can go for offline/online coaching. 

The exams are conducted in various phases followed by interview/document verification and medical examination. For groups with no college degrees, the following job positions are available in the Indian Railways:

 

Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper, Trains Clerk, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Railway Constable, and some other group D posts.

Assistant Loco Pilot (RRB ALP) and technician- Candidates with Matriculation/SSLC and  Apprenticeship in the Trades 

OR 

Engineering Degree/ Matriculation/SSLC together with ITI from a recognized institution in relevant trade. 

OR

A 3-year Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile Engineering OR a combination of these Engineering Disciplines from recognized institutions.

 

Railway job options for 12+B.Tech (or BE students)/Diploma/ Graduation

Minimum educational qualification Degree or its equivalent:

Traffic Assistant 

Goods Guard 

Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk 

Senior Clerk cum Typist 

Junior Account Assistant cum Typist 

Senior Time Keeper 

Commercial Apprentice 

Station Master

 

Minimum educational qualification Engineering graduates.

Junior Engineer (JE), Junior Engineer (Information Technology) [JE(IT)], Depot Material Superintendent (DMS), and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA). There are exams for the Group A category that is Indian Services Examination (IES) conducted by UPSC, and Staff Selection Commission (SSC). 

 

Railway Jobs after MBBS

For MBBS graduates the Indian Railways sector has got job opportunities in IRMS: Medical Service after clearing Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) conducted by UPSC. MBBS graduates will be recruited as Group A officers.
