CBSE board exams began on February 17th. If your CBSE 10th exam didn't go as well as expected or you didn't score well, there's no need to worry. This time, the board has opened up a way for students to save their year. Relief has been provided under CBSE's new two-exam scheme, which begins with the 2025-26 academic session. Therefore, it's important that students understand the new rules, the two board exams, and the registration process in detail.
These students will get a second chance to appear for the board exam.
According to CBSE, if a student feels they didn't perform well in the CBSE 10th exam, they can take a second CBSE board exam to improve their scores. Students are allowed to improve their scores in three subjects, including math, science, social science, and language. This means that even if their performance is below expectations, they don't have to wait an entire year.
When will registration for the second board exam begin?
For students who fail in math or an additional subject, the second board exam offers a compartment option. Those who fail in one or two subjects in the first exam can reappear in the compartment category. The registration process for the CBSE second board exam will begin after the first exam is over. However, the dates have not yet been officially announced.
Second board exam likely in May
Under the changed system, all students will have to appear for the first board exam, which is the main exam. CBSE will conduct the second board exam in May 2026, in the same academic year. The results of the first board exam are expected to be released in April. The results of the second exam will be announced in June.
Similar syllabus and pattern for both exams
The board has also announced the eligibility categories for both exams. The first exam includes new candidates, second-chance compartment candidates, required repeat students from the previous year, and students in the improvement category. CBSE has stated that the syllabus, exam pattern, and question format will remain the same for both exams.
How many exams are required?
The board has already stated that the first board exam will be considered the main exam, so appearing in it is mandatory. Only students who have appeared in the first exam will be eligible to appear for the second board exam. According to the board, appearing in at least four subjects in the first board exam is mandatory. This means that appearing in more than three subjects is mandatory before a student will be eligible for further opportunities.
